A Spectacular Day in the PNW

This is the Hood Canal, looking east. The slight dip in the land on the horizon on the left is actually the floating Hood Canal Bridge.

It was a spectacular, beautiful day up here in the Pacific Northwest. Sun, sun, sun. It wasn’t really warm enough to sit out in, but was the perfect temperature for a walk around town.

It is so amazing when the sun comes out. People are smiling and friendly, willing to slow down to enjoy the bright shiny thing in the sky.

Cabin Fever

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Oh man, talk about cabin fever! I have been trying to limit my driving – gas is up again as are expenses – but I HAD to get out of here today!

So my excuse was, although a necessity, was to take the rubbish to the dump! How exciting is that? But then I added on a trip into Port Townsend and coffee with Susan at our favorite, Tyler Street Cafe. Actually, our favorite was closed for an upgrade, it’s going to be a full cocktail bar and restaurant when it reopens in a couple of months. I’m afraid it won’t have that wonderful vibe anymore, so Undertown might be off our list. But we won’t write it off until we check it out.

And then we went for a lovely walk around town and discovered (actually Susan knew about it) a delightful Tea and Spice store. It smelled wonderful and I can get all the spices I need for curry and chai – same price as Central Market – so that is a real find. I didn’t buy anything, just lifted lids and sniffed a lot!

I haven’t been a tourist in Port Townsend for a while and there are a couple of new restaurants and stores I need to check out. The town was busy, as the sun was out! I had to park quite a way from the center which is unusual, but good for the merchants.

But what a difference the sun makes – even though it was cold = turtle neck, sweater and jacket – my glasses knew the sun had strength as they turned really dark to protect me! Damn my Transition lenses, I need all the light I can get!

Back to the Gray

Yep, summer definitely ended. Gray skies, rain and cold with occasional sun breaks. It’s amazing how fast it happened – one day beautiful, sunny, clear; the next, dark, gray and dreary. And that’s how my mood goes, following the weather patterns.

But at least Betsy got some of the best weather in ages. It was so good during her first couple of weeks here, she said that if she heard me complaining again, she wouldn’t believe me! But now she knows and she’s leaving. She was leaving anyway, but her timing is good – head south to warmer, clearer skies.

It has certainly been such fun having her here. I’ve been out and about more as it really is more enjoyable to do stuff with someone who enjoys the same things. And as we are both on such tight budgets, most of what we have done has been either free or very inexpensive! Things like the Farmers Markets, apple picking, cider pressing – and tasting, a cup of coffee here and there, the Kinetic Skulpture Race, wine and beer tastings… We enjoyed those outings as much as we did others when we were flush – way back when.

It is so much easier living with a woman than a man! Maybe I am generalizing and being sexist but damn! Betsy just gets in there and does what needs to be done. She cooks and cleans up; she helped me cut back the huge kiwi vine that was taking over the house and then clean the gutters that were blocked by the leaves from the vine. I don’t think they had been cleaned since the house was painted eight years ago. It’s so nice never having to ask someone, or nag someone to help or do something. Or have to ask for help with a project. I’m not used to that so might have to reconsider getting a roommate.

And one of the best things? The toilet seat is always down!

We’ve reminisced a lot about where we have been, where we have hooked up and hung out, where we have actually shared living spaces, the places and trips we took and those have spanned the globe. It’s interesting though. We have completely different daily schedules. I get up early and go to bed early. She stays up late and wakes late so we both get our private or alone time without any effort. She loves Hinckley and Buddy (fortunately!) despite all their fur, and they love her. I think they will miss her as much as I will when she heads out next week. Most of all, I think I will miss all the laughter! We get a bit silly sometimes, but who cares! It’s good for the soul.

I had so hoped to not be here this winter but it looks like I will have to be. Despite ongoing efforts, ecology has not come through with anything substantial. I am working with the bank to keep this house; the Port Angeles house is ticking over with the tenants paying albeit a little late each month; the condo is still sitting there. The loan has just been sold so I plan to work with the new mortgage people to try to keep it too. I sent the bank a proposal and they actually responded with what I needed to do. I began preparing the documents and then got the letter saying the loan was sold! But I think the new company might be easier to deal with than BoA, so am hopeful that the condo will remain in the portfolio!

I have given myself six months. If all the house stuff is not settled by then, then I will walk away – don’t know where to, but something will show up. It usually does. Having the kitties makes it more difficult, but these two little guys have made my life bearable so many times, I can’t abandon them. So where I go, they go too.

The new magazine job is ok – it’s not something that I am going to get sucked in to and work hundreds of hours on. For the potential pay – appropriate hours. But I think it will be fun and it will involve trips, locally. Some by seaplane which will be a treat and stays in resorts etc, rather like I did for Country Life.

Now it’s time for me to get to work – but first, one more cup of coffee.

Summer Lingers On

end of summer

Our summer is going on and on and on…and you don’t hear me complaining! In fact, you don’t hear anyone complaining about the 70+ days of dry, sunny weather we are having.

But the days are definitely getting a lot shorter – and despite the moderately warm days, the nights are decidedly nippy. As the sun drops closer to the top of the hill, the temperature drops ten degrees – instantly.

Mornings need the heat on and windows closed until mid-morning. And oh the colors, though! Morning warm colors lighting the trees across the estuary, and the air so still the water is like glass with barely a ripple.

Betsy arrived on Tuesday and every day has been perfect. She is saying if the weather doesn’t change, she is never going to believe my whining about the gray, the cold, the damp! I just looked at the forecast and it looks like the next two weeks are going to be good with perhaps the chance of a shower or two. But the telling factor is the falling night time temperatures; down to the 30s in two weeks. Bbbbbrrrrrr….

Late summer morning light on the estuary

We’ve been out and about a bit – this morning at the farmers market (photos) and then lunch at the Blue Moose Cafe with a beer at the brewery after that. More activity than I normally have, but we are both on very tight budgets so watching pennies. Tomorrow, if we don’t go out to Port Angeles to see the house and tenants, we’ll go back up to Port Townsend to watch the Kinetic Skulpture Race – a typically bizarre Port Townsend event.

I added a new title to my list of jobs – Editor of Harbors Magazine and Around the Pacific Northwest magazine. Both are run by the same publisher who is local in Port Townsend. Both are quarterly mags, so there isn’t a huge amount of work although from the first drafts of some of the articles I’ve seen, it might take me longer than anticipated! Some of the writing is atrocious! Anyway, it should be fun and I hope to get a couple of trips out of it, which will add to the benefits. A seaplane flight up into the islands would be good!

Ecology is still waiting… and waiting… and waiting. The BIG investor meeting is supposed to be next Saturday which apparently is the make it or break it point, so we are holding thumbs that something comes of it. I REALLY want it to work as it feels like the right place for me to be. Then, when that back pay comes through, I can get the repairs on the house done and get it rented out and maybe out of here by the dead of winter. At least that is the current plan but it all hinges on ecology. Otherwise, looks like I will be here for the duration.

If that is the case, then I will unpack my boxes (still stored and hidden away) and hang all my pictures and put out all my stuff so it feels like home.

Not Much Has Changed

Olympic Mountain sunset

I’ve been here in the house now for two weeks. It feels like just yesterday when I walked in to find the disaster!

It’s all cleaned up now, the yard cleaned up and – mostly – weeded. But this time of year, the weeds pop up faster than I can keep up!

My boxes are still all packed up and stored upstairs. So I don’t have my “stuff” around as I don’t plan on being here for long, one way or another!

I’ve been doing the soul-destroying job search. A couple of prospects with a phone interview tomorrow – provided he calls as promised! Sounds interesting, but until I know more about it and whether it is actually funded and a going concern, I am not getting excited! I would much rather have ecology come through, as I doubt if I will ever find a job I enjoy as much, around a subject that intrigues me, with something new and exciting happening every day.

So I remain optimistic but am taking the necessary steps to find something else, if my optimism is misplaced!

But the best news is that every time I talk to Ryan, he is doing better and better. He still can’t do any exercise, has to wait another five weeks, but overall he is doing great!

Buddy eyesThe weather has not been cooperating much; a few hours here or there of sunshine. Usually late in the day when there is little warmth left in it. I have had the heater on most days. And the summer solstice is just 10 days away! We are having global cooling up here.

Still loving my little camera – the mountain pix above is zoomed out to 600 – pretty incredible. Then I can get close-up like Buddy’s eyes.

But like any camera, there is still a lot to learn about it but what fun!

So overall, not much has changed. Just keeping on, moving forward, day at a time, step by step.

Never Trust an Ex

Sometimes you learn the hard way what a lowlife your ex is. And yesterday was my day.

Chris left the house without telling me and owing me rent for next month. I know he is alcoholic and bi-polar, but this is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. I suppose it just shows the complete lack of integrity that he has. The house is filthy, the garden a complete mess like nothing has been done and the work that he promised to do for the very reduced rent he was paying has not been done or even started.

But what makes me the angriest – and I am fuming – is that he left the kitties here in the house. What would have happened if I hadn’t come down as planned? What if something had happened? They were the main reason I let him stay here in the first place, so they would be taken care of. Poor little guys are all matted, he hasn’t taken care of them at all. They were cuddled up with me all night, motors running so loud they woke me up.

And all because he couldn’t make a commitment to sign a rental agreement so I could hand the house over to a property manager so I wouldn’t have to deal with the new girlfriend he wanted to install here.

So here I am again, in the little house on the water, with my kitties and wondering why this is all happening. Everything happens for a reason “they” say but what the hell is the reason for this? I never intended to come back to stay in the house, just to get some of my stuff that is stored here. Now it looks like I will be here for a bit to get it cleaned up and his junk trashed.

The good thing is, I know who my friends are and dear Bill has lent me a Jeep so I have wheels down here at the end of the earth. At least for a few days while I figure out what to do. The locksmith came yesterday and changed all the locks and for the first time since I lived here, I locked all the doors last night, not that I think he will come back here.

The weather is beautiful so that helps. The osprey was out fishing last night and there was a Canadian goose on the water.

Today I will go to the Farmers Market in Port Townsend with Susan, with my new camera then come back down and start cleaning and sorting. Not exactly what I had in mind for my time in Washington.

Port Townsend and the Sun is Shining!

Sun in Port Townsend!

Cape Cleare salmon sandwich

Susan and I had a local lunch today - Cape Cleare salmon grilled at the outdoor bbq at the Co-op. Yummm...

It was gray when I landed yesterday but a brilliant sunset as we approached Port Townsend. But it poured like crazy overnight and this morning – voila! Partial sun mixed with full sun!

It really is a beautiful place when the sun is out. This is the sort of weather where visitors say, “Oh it’s so beautiful! Let’s move here!” Most last two years and can’t handle the cold and gray and flee…

wisteria

Susan had to show some tenants property today and the entry was covered with wisteria.

But I know what it is really like and how rare these days are so there is no chance it can work it’s magic on me.

This evening, we are meeting up with Mardelle at Galatea for one of their famous martinis but it will be an early night as she is going to kick up her heels at a dance class tonight and Susan has a big day of work tomorrow.

New Camera

Yesterday, I got the camera I have been wanting! The Panasonic Lumix FZ150 and it is soooo cool! It’s light and seems to do just about everything I want it to do, including video! Tested it this morning and I think I will get the hang of it really fast.

At the beginning of the week, I shipped off my Canon 30D to B&H Photo as a trade in. As much as I loved that camera, it was just too big and heavy for me. And so “in your face” and as I am not doing any pro work any more, this little camera is going to be just fine.

Ryan is well on the mend and goes back to work next week. Although he would have liked to have gone back earlier, the sciatica he has been suffering from has actually been (I think) a blessing in disguise as he has had time to rest, see all the doctors and recuperate. The position he is going back into hopefully won’t be as stressful and he isn’t required to travel, something he is not supposed to do for another month or so.

Wednesday, I go to Port Townsend. Betsy will be back here on Friday. It will be interesting going up there to the cold weather again although it is almost the summer solstice but it is typically Washington weather at the moment. At least I know I won’t be staying there forever! I will be a visitor who can oooh and aaah about how beautiful it is —– and then leave!
